British man goes on trial accused of killing US soldier with roadside bomb in Iraq

A man has gone on trial in London accused of murdering a U.S. soldier with a roadside bomb in Iraq.

Anis Abid Sardar, a 38-year-old British citizen, is accused of making bombs in Syria that were planted on the western outskirts of Baghdad in 2007. Prosecutors say one killed Sgt. First Class Randy Johnson of 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment when it hit his armored vehicle.

Sardar was arrested last year after his fingerprints were found on bombs recovered by U.S. forces. He denies murder, conspiracy to murder and conspiracy to cause an explosion.

Prosecutor Max Hill told jurors at London’s high-security Woolwich Crown Court Tuesday that the trial was unusual because “almost all of the evidence you will hear and see comes from Iraq.” Sardar lives and works in Britain.
