Soldiers return from West Africa; quarantined at Fort Bliss

FORT BLISS — A soldier who returned to Fort Bliss from West Africa on Tuesday is being monitored for Ebola, according to the public information officer for Fort Bliss.

Officials said out of the 68 soldiers who returned Tuesday, one expressed concerns of being ill on the plane, according to the spokesman.

The soldier was immediately taken to William Beaumont Army Medical Center where his initial Ebola test results were negative. The soldier is still being held in isolation and monitored as of Wednesday. The spokesman for Fort Bliss said the soldier’s illness could be anything from the flu to a stomach bug.

The other 68 soldiers are in mandatory quarantine for 21 days, the incubation period for Ebola symptoms to manifest. Officials said none of the soldiers are from Fort Bliss and they are being held there because the base is one of the five quarantine destinations for soldiers returning from West Africa.
